SenseLab is a neurodivergent architecture studio; we design public spaces around neurodivergency, sensory processing, and the human nervous system.
The problem
Environments built to overstimulate
Many public and commercial spaces are designed to capture attention: bright lights, reflective surfaces, overlapping music, digital screens, competing smells, crowds, queues, temperature shifts, and constant movement. That is sensory super-stimulation by design.
For neurodivergent people, autistic individuals, people with ADHD, sensory processing differences, and others, this isn’t just uncomfortable. It can mean hypersensitivity or hyposensitivity to light, sound, smell, texture, and taste, leading to real sensory overload: restlessness, panic, the urge to block out the world, or a wave of sudden fatigue.
Accessibility has traditionally meant ramps, lifts, toilets, and parking. Important, but not enough. Today, inclusion also means the following:
- Sensory comfort
- Cognitive legibility
- Clear wayfinding
- Predictable circulation
- Quiet thresholds and decompression areas
- Readable entrances and exits
- Non-overwhelming lighting
- Choice of intensity
When a space overwhelms people, it loses them, not just as visitors, but as participants in shared public life.

What “neurodivergent” means
“Neurodivergent” describes individuals whose brain function, learning, and behavioural development diverge from the statistically common “neurotypical” range (including autism, ADHD, sensory integration differences, dyspraxia, and more).
10–20% of the global population is estimated to be neurodivergent, roughly 1 in 5 to 1 in 10 people.

That is not a niche. It is a substantial part of everyone who moves through the buildings and public spaces we design.
The science
Two nervous systems, one building
Most stimulating environments (shopping malls, airports, stations, plazas, and offices) activate the
sympathetic nervous system: exciting, high-stimulation, and geared toward alertness and consumption. That’s by design, and it isn’t inherently wrong.
What’s missing is the other half. The
parasympathetic nervous system governs calm and recovery, and spaces built for it are rare. Architecture rarely gives people a place to regulate, breathe, and return.
We design for both. Not by removing stimulation from a space, but by building in the possibility of recovery within it.
Rethinking the default
Why isolated “sensory rooms” aren’t the answer
The instinctive response to sensory overload has often been a dedicated sensory room: a separate space, tucked away, equipped with soft lights and textures. It’s a well-meaning idea, but it has real limits.
A single, isolated room can reinforce the feeling of being “different,” “weird,” and separate from everyone else, defaulting to a generic, child-centred aesthetic that ignores adults and diverse needs and treating inclusion as a back-of-house fix rather than a visible, dignified part of the space.
We believe this approach, on its own, is no longer enough, and in some cases it can even reinforce the exclusion it was meant to solve.
Our approach
From isolated support to distributed inclusion
This is what neurodivergent architecture looks like in practice. Instead of one room at the edge of a building, we design systems: distributed, dignified moments of regulation woven into the everyday fabric of a space, visible enough that people understand their purpose, integrated enough that using them isn’t a retreat from public life but a part of it.
- Greater choice and flexibility. People decide when and how to step back, without having to leave.
- Awareness among neurotypical visitors. Visible, understood infrastructure builds empathy instead of stigma.
- Stronger integration and inclusion. A dignified system, not a hidden accommodation.

A dual mission. One thread is
protection, offering safe, private moments of regulation during sensory overwhelm. The other is
connection, ensuring neurodivergent people have the same dignity, visibility, and opportunity as everyone else.
Protection without visibility isn’t enough. Visibility without protection isn’t either.
Why it matters
Beyond the building
Neurodivergent people are not a separate audience from everyone else’s daily life. When one person is overwhelmed by noise, lighting, or crowds, the people with them (a parent, a sibling, a partner, or a friend) are affected too.
A single unaccommodated moment can shape whether a family stays, an employee performs at their best, a student stays in class, or a visitor comes back at all. Neurotypical design has quietly set the default for public spaces for a long time. We think that default is due for a rethink – grounded not in guesswork, but in how the nervous system actually works.
Who we are
Neurodivergent architecture: 2 architects + 1 neuroscientist
SENSE LAB is a small, focused team: architects working alongside a PhD neuroscientist, translating research on the nervous system into design decisions, from lighting and acoustics to circulation, wayfinding, and material choice.
We work with organisations who want to move past compliance checklists and build something that actually reflects how people experience space differently. It’s the same thinking behind our broader
design approach, applied to
our projects.
